....an exciting new work for Bhangra band, brass band and soprano voice - engaging and upbeat with huge energy and excitement. Created by composer Liz Lane and RSVP Bhangra with additional words by Andy Rashleigh, Surtaal Symphony is a cross-cultural collaboration, blending and inter-weaving Western and Punjabi musical traditions.
Surtaal Symphony originates from........two important words in the Bhangra tradition:
Sur = melody, Taal = rhythm Liz and the RSVP team have added another two Bhangra ideas to complete the traditional four movement symphonic form: Raasar = expression/emotion, Bol = lyric The work weaves together Punjabi stories such as Heer Ranjha, a love story about forbidden love and tragic death, with similar tales from European culture, such as Romeo and Juliet, perhaps showing that our traditions have more in common than we might think…. |
